Why Have Americans Become Disinterested in Self-Driving Cars?

The Latest on Self-Driving Cars

A recent projection by Business Inside predicts that as many as 10 million self-driving vehicles will be on the roads by 2020. While it wasn’t long ago we were all fascinated with the thought of self-driving vehicles, recent studies have found that Americans have lost interest in these cars.

A poll of 1,800 Americans found that 75 percent are not yet ready to trust the driving done by robots. In addition, less than half of Americans (43 percent) are interested in using self-driving vehicles, which is down from 53 percent last year. So, why the sudden lack of interest?

Uber, Tesla, and Google have been trialing self-driving vehicles, and recently they have had some bad press. On Uber’s test drive, the vehicle hit a pedestrian crossing the road at a crosswalk, and Tesla’s vehicle drove into a concrete barrier. On both occasions, fatalities occurred. Google’s vehicle was partially at fault in a run-in with a public transit bus. This was the first accident in six years in which one of the company’s robot cars was at fault. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this accident.

Unsurprisingly, the studies found that the sudden drop in interest from Americans was because of safety concerns. Many were not yet ready to hand over full control to a robot, especially in light of the accidents that show technology is not yet up to scratch.
