Stress can get to the most even-keeled people and can come from many sources, whether it’s work, family, or social life. Stress is a natural part of life. However, chronic stress is not. Chronic stress can have a serious impact on your mental and physical health, from fatigue, muscle tension, irritability, and even health concerns. In honor of National Stress Awareness Month, we’ve rounded up our top tips on how to keep calm and relieve stress.

Exercise. Exercise is a great stress reliever. It releases endorphins, which, in turn, make you feel happier. Make it your goal to ramp up your exercise routine so that you get in a workout every day.

Use essential oils. Certain scents, including lavender, jasmine, and ylang ylang are known to help alleviate stress. Pick up a couple of essential oils and massage them into your temples when you feel a pang of stress arising.

Mediate. Mediation is well known to relieve stress, manage emotions, and increase positivity. If you don’t know where to start, download a free app, such as Headspace, for guided meditation and mindfulness.

Get enough sleep. Getting enough shut-eye is imperative to our health. Sleeping helps to restore the mind-body system and strengthen our immune system. If you’re not catching at least 8 hours of sleep a night, aim to unwind before bed. Read a book, take a bath, or find whatever it is helps you to relax before sleep.

Practice yoga. Doing regular yoga can prevent injuries, increase your energy levels, and reduce insomnia. Yoga incorporates the mind, body, and breath, encouraging you to focus on the present moment. Find a class near you or look up free videos online to get started!

Eat mood-boosting foods. When we’re stressed, it’s easy to turn to fast and processed foods for comfort and out of ease. However, these foods aren’t helping us. Clear out your kitchen and trade unhealthy staples for fresh fruit, greens, vegetables, decaf hot drinks, and whole foods.
