Is Your Small Business Ready for a Winter Storm?

How to brace your business for bad weather.

The festivities may be over but the winter has only just begun. That means we’ve got a couple months of adverse weather ahead of us. While you may only be getting used to long days of work again after the holidays, your business needs to ensure it is prepared for winter storms. Of all the things to plan for, weather probably isn’t one of them – and that is a costly mistake for most business owners.

Follow these steps to prepare for any weather emergency.

Develop a plan.

How will you manage in the event of a winter disaster? Who is responsible for what? What do you need to run your business at a remote site? These are questions you want to ask yourself well before a disaster hits. You should develop an emergency plan so that you know how to deal with a disaster and employees know what to do. You may need to stock up on office supplies and necessary storm supplies. Another good way to prepare is to back up all of your data so that you and your employees can access important information while away from the office. This will help your business continue to turn a profit even if the office is damaged.

Watch the weather.

Keeping up to date with the weather forecast is more important than you may realize. Knowing about a storm as soon as possible gives you and your team ample time to prepare for the worst and get as much done as possible. This additional time could be used to make crucial game-changing decisions. Follow weather updates and don’t hesitate to take action before it’s too late.

Understand your coverage.

While your standard workers’ compensation insurance and general liability insurance should protect your employees and customers when they suffer injuries on the premises, additional coverage is highly advised. Talk to your insurer about adding business interruption insurance to your business owner’s policy. If an owner doesn’t have business interruption insurance or extra expense coverage, they may not be able to claim their loss of revenue or relocation expenses. This means that all of those costs come out of your pocket.
