Tips to Help You Drive Safely in the Dark

How to Drive Safely in the Dark

We all know that driving in the dark is more difficult than driving in the daylight. Unfortunately, now that twilight is arriving sooner and sooner in Pennsylvania (approx 6:00 p.m.), it means we find ourselves driving home from work in the dark. It goes without saying that there are more dangers of driving in the dark. The question is, what can you do about it? Check out these tips to help you drive safely in the dark.

Keep your eyes on the lines. Headlights from oncoming traffic can dazzle your eyes, meaning you have a  harder time adjusting to the dark. Generally, you should avoid looking at the bright lights from oncoming traffic. If you are having a hard time seeing the road, take note of the white line marking the traffic lane’s edge on the right side of the road.

Keep your windshield clean and clear. You may think nothing of a little bit of dirt and a few smudges on your windshield during the day, but come night-time, they will show up very clearly. As a result, they may distort your vision, making it difficult to see at night. A professional car detailer will often use newspaper to clean the interior windshield surface, although a cotton or microfibre cloth will also work well.

Dim the interior lights. If dashboard displays are too night, you may find that your night vision is impaired. To help, locate your dashboard’s dimmer switch so that you can reduce the glow inside your vehicle.

Be aware of animals. Fall is deer mating season, which means that they are more active and may roam across roads. In rural areas, always be on the lookout for wildlife. Even if you safely pass one animal, be aware that there may be more up ahead.
