How Can You Prevent Burst Pipes This Winter?

Avoid Frozen or Burst Water Pipes This Season

There’s no denying that the temperatures continue to drop in Pennsylvania. While we’re pulling on our thick sweaters and cranking up the heating, it’s important to spare a moment to think of our home’s pipes that we readily rely on. In the cooler weather, pipes are more susceptible to freezing. When the water in the pipe freezes, it expands, causing the pipe’s material to strain and tear. Once the water starts to melt, this could result in home flooding. To keep your pipes in good condition this season and avoid potential floods, check out these tips.

Avoiding Frozen Pipes:

  • Ensure water tanks and exposed pipes are well-insulated. Heat tape can be purchased from hardware stores to help protect especially vulnerable pipes from freezing.
  • Keep your home’s heating on low, even when you’re heading out of town. This means the system is still working, preventing standing, and then freezing, liquids.
  • Drain your yard’s hosepipe so that there is no water left in the pipe. Do the same with the exterior faucet.
  • Minimize draughts and close doors and windows in unheated parts of the property.
  • Caulk windows and doors that may be letting in cool air.
  • Leave your kitchen sink’s cupboard open so that warm air can circulate around the water pipes.
  • Allow the faucet to drip to prevent pressure from building up.
  • Seal up cracks and holes that exist near pipes.
