Winter Gardening Tips for Every Homeowner

How to Prepare Your Home for Spring

The New Year is the perfect time to get out in the garden and do some essential maintenance and planning for the spring. While we’re still in winter, it’s a good time to look ahead and prepare for spring in your yard. The more preparation you do in advance, the better! Get those few last winter gardening jobs out of the way now to set your garden up for success in spring!

Keep an eye on outdoor pots, planters, and tubs.

Any plant in a container can dry out over winter. Pay particular attention to those that are close to the wall. Now is the time to ensure that the plant hasn’t depleted all the nutrient value of the soil (in which case, change the compost) or outgrown its pot.

Plan a vegetable patch

If you don’t have a vegetable patch but are looking to create one, now is the perfect opportunity to think about it! Decide which vegetables you want to plant. The main crop grounds are root vegetables, brassicas (cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), legumes (peas and beans), and leafy salads. Plan to plant vegetables from each of the groups in their own patch and then rotate where you plant them each year. This is the best way to avoid lots of root pests and diseases.

Make repairs

The early months of the year are a good time to carry out repair jobs around the garden, such as replacing broken fences and re-felting your shed roof. If anything has been damaged over the winter, ensure you see to it now.

Get the tools ready

Now is the time to give garden tools and equipment a good cleaning to help keep them in fine working order. Wash them down, scrub away any grime, and dry them thoroughly.

Keep off the lawn

Stay off the lawn if it is wet or frozen. Keep raking up fallen leaves both from the lawn and from borders to stop pests from sheltering under debris. As the days warm up, mow the lawn when the grass is dry.
